Simple Moving Tips Everyone Needs to Know

Purge and Organize
Your first step in the moving process should be purging and organizing everything. The last thing you want to do is move stuff only to sell or donate it once you get moved. It’s also much easier to pack an organized space than a messy space. Start packing two to three weeks before the move, by this point you should have purged and organized every space.

Forward your Mail
Moving can be a stressful time. Arrange for your mail to be forwarded to your new address a few weeks before you move so you will not miss any of your important mail. For more info visit the Canada Post website www.canadapost.ca Once you’re settled you can deal with changing your Driver’s Licence and update your new address everywhere.

Frames and Decor First
Pack home decor and frames first, and unpack them last. These are things that are non-essential, but take a long time to pack and unpack. Walk around your entire house taking all decor and art and bring it to the dining room table or kitchen counter. Pack it all up together marked “Decor and Frames.” This way when you get to your new house it can get stacked out of the way, and you can deal with it once you have time. When you get to your new house you can get creative and arrange your decor and frames in to your new space.

“First Day” Survival Baskets
Set aside a few laundry baskets labeled “First Day, Don’t Pack.” While packing this is where you’ll throw the things in that you can’t be searching for on your first night in your new house. Things like phone chargers, pet food, your purse, or your kids school bag. Have a basket with linens, towels, soap, shampoo, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, paper towels etc., These baskets will travel with you by car to your new home.

Paper Plates and Plastic Cutlery
Don’t wait until the last minute to pack your kitchen. The kitchen is one of the most tedious rooms to pack, you don’t realize how much stuff you have until you have to pack it. Pack the kitchen early, and then survive the final week or two before you move making simple meals with paper plates and plastic utensils. You’ll also appreciate not having to worry about doing dishes. Make sure you throw some paper plates and plastic cutlery into one of the “First Day” baskets for your new house so that you don’t have to unpack your kitchen immediately.

Labeling
Don’t worry about writing exactly what is in each box. Just label which room it goes to. This way the movers will know where to take it. Most likely you’ll be unpacking the entire room at once, rather than searching for one item.

Tape Gun
Get a tape gun. It will make taping boxes a one person job instead of two. It also means that you don’t have to try and keep track of tape and scissors.

Packing Paper
Always use packing paper for protecting your fragile stuff. You can purchase packing paper at most moving supply companies (UHAUL), or hardware stores. Also, moving companies often sell it as well.

Uniform Boxes
Buy uniform sized boxes as much as possible, to make loading the moving truck easier.  Boxes that are the same size stack way easier!  Also, be careful not to make your boxes too heavy.  By evenly distributing the weight in your boxes, they will be easier to move and stack.

Happy Moving!!
