It was a very special time when I had the chance to visit the soldiers cemetery in Ypres, Belgium. Once there, I found out that it is the largest cemetery for commonwealth soldiers in the world. We were in search of Allison’s great grandfather place of rest who was fighting for Scotland at the time. On this special day we should all take a moment to say thanks to all those brave men and women who have served and continue to serve our country.
Eight Canadian flags sent to Afghanistan earlier this year to symbolize Burlington’s support of the troops will return Friday as part of a special presentation during the city’s Remembrance Day ceremony.
The ceremony will start at 11 a.m. at city hall’s cenotaph at the corner of Brant and Ontario streets.
A Remembrance Day parade will start earlier in the day at 10:30 a.m. at Central Public School (638 Brant St.) and travel south on Brant Street to Elgin Street, continue west towards Locust Street and then south to end on Ontario Street. If you head downtown for the ceremony, be sure to thank every veteran you see because they fought for you and many of their friends paid the ultimate sacrifice for your freedom.
